Philip J. Smith 91 years old of Hegewisch passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, June 21 2023. Born 6-17-1932 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Nancy A. (Ruel) and John E. Smith. Preceded in death by his late wife of 48 years Mary (Rys) and daughter Susan, brother Jack (Pat), Don (Diane), sisters Nancy, Rosemary (Paul) Bryan and Dorothy Ericson.
Philip is survived by his wife of 13 years Irene Parat, daughters Nancy (Cindy) and Lynne (Robert) Radabaugh. Grandchildren Ashlie (Keenan)Ray and Noah (Alma) Mooney. Stepchildren Joe (Kathy) and Debbie (James). Step grandchildren Ryan Radabaugh and Gabriel Ghan.
Philip is an alumni of Mount Carmel High School class of 1951. Phil is a retired plumber for Cook County, Oak Forest Hospital. Previous co-owner of Venturia Plumbing Company. Proud Chicago Journeyman Plumbers local #130. A member since 1954. Avid long time Chicago White Sox’s fan. Long time member of St. Florian’s Holy Name Society. He donated many hours of his pluming knowledge, skills, and labor to keep the church and school in great working order. Phil belonged to the Hegewisch Lion’s club, holding various positions in the club including President. Vice- President, and Co-Chairman of the Lions’ Candy Day for many years, keeping street corners and local businesses full of volunteers collecting for the great cause and keeping his volunteers happy to return each year to collect for him.
Phil was also an appreciated member of the Knights of Columbus serving various positions including Grand Knight, Assistant Grand Knight, and Secretary. You could always find Phil seated at the ticket table during the Famous Knight’s Pancake Breakfast and Spaghetti Dinners, welcoming you with his warm smile and Sparkling Irish Eyes.
In his lifetime Phil worked on many plumbing side jobs on Saturdays, Sundays, and evenings alongside his fellow plumber, best friend, and brother-in-law John Turman.
Phil is an uncle to many nieces and nephews, and a friend to all who knew him. He always had time to listen and offer the best advice.
Arrangements for Philip entrusted to Sadowski Funeral Home of Hegewisch 13300 S. Houston Ave. Chicago, IL 60633. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 25, 2023 from 2 pm until 8 pm. Funeral Service Monday June 26, 2023 from 9am until 10am, for 10:30am Funeral Mass at St. Florian Church of Hegewisch. Internment Holy Cross Cemetery.
